The Rusty Anchor's Reckoning

The air in The Rusty Anchor, an old industrial dockside tavern, hung thick with the smell of stale beer and brine. Rain hammered against the grimy skylight, each drop a percussive beat against the heavy silence. Inside, the dim glow of Edison bulbs cast long, flickering shadows across the wet floorboards and the imposing green-veined marble table at the room's center. Chains, thick and rusted, dripped condensation onto the worn timber walls, a constant reminder of the port outside.

I clutched my brass tray, its emptiness amplifying the tremor in my hands. My name is Sarah, and tonight, the usual rough but quiet atmosphere was shattered. Damian Knox, a mob lieutenant whose arrogance was as sharp as his tailored suit, had arrived. Tonight, he wasn't alone. With him sat David Holloway, the legendary crime boss, a man whose presence commanded a chilling, predatory calm. He was older, his silver-streaked hair framing a face etched with scars, but his eyes held a lethal focus that promised danger.

My shift had been long, my nerves frayed. As I navigated between tables, a sudden jolt sent a splash of cheap red wine onto Damian's expensive cuffs. His head snapped up, his eyes locking onto mine with pure venom. "You spilled cheap wine on my ten-thousand-dollar cuffs, you pathetic stray!" he snarled, his jaw clenching. I froze, mouth shut, chin quivering, tears blurring my vision. Holloway, from his corner, merely narrowed his eyes, a silent, terrifying observer.

Then, faster than I could comprehend, Damian's hand struck. A violent, wet crack echoed as he backhanded me across the face. My head spun, saliva and blood spraying from my lips. The brass tray crashed to the floor, its noise lost in the sudden, sharp intake of breath from the few patrons still present. "Know your place in my city!" Damian spat, his mockery chilling. I staggered back, clutching my throbbing jaw, choked sobs wracking my body. All the while, Holloway began to rise, his movement deliberate, smooth, and utterly menacing.
