A Father's Nightmare in the Cold Lobby

The sterile scent of antiseptic did nothing to calm Mark’s racing heart as he burst through the double doors of the clinic. In his arms, his seven-year-old daughter, Lily, whimpered softly, her small hands clutching her abdomen. Her face was pale, dotted with cold sweat, and her bright red hair was damp against her forehead. Mark set her down gently near the reception desk, hoping for immediate assistance.

"Ma'am, my tummy hurts a lot!"

Lily sobbed, her voice cracking with pain as she leaned against the cold counter. Behind the desk sat Brenda, a receptionist with a perfectly coiffed blonde bob and a sharp black blazer. She didn't even look up from her computer screen at first. When she finally did, her eyes held nothing but annoyance.

"You wait your turn here, just like everyone else,"

Brenda said, her voice dripping with dismissive coldness. She gestured vaguely to a waiting room filled with patients. Mark stepped forward, his navy windbreaker rustling as he tried to control his rising panic. He could see that Lily was in agony, likely suffering from acute appendicitis. Every second wasted was a step closer to tragedy.

"Please," Mark pleaded, his voice trembling but firm. "My daughter is in severe pain. This isn't a standard check-up. She needs to be seen by a doctor immediately." Brenda sighed heavily, clicking her pen with an irritating rhythm. She looked at Mark's simple windbreaker and worn jeans, instantly making a judgment about his status. To her, he was just another demanding parent who thought his child was more important than anyone else. She pointed a manicured finger toward the back of the queue, completely ignoring the little girl sobbing at her feet.
