The Escalation at the Front Desk

Mark’s patience snapped, but he kept his voice low and dangerous. He leaned over the counter, his eyes locking onto Brenda’s. "I am not going to ask you again. Get a triage nurse out here right now, or I will carry her into the emergency ward myself." Brenda’s face flushed with anger. She was used to wielding absolute authority over the lobby, and she did not tolerate defiance.

"If you take one step past that security door, I will have you arrested,"

she threatened, her hand hovering over the telephone. "You do not get to cut the line just because you are loud." Lily let out another sharp cry, collapsing onto the tiled floor as she clutched her stomach. Mark knelt beside his daughter, his heart breaking as he comforted her, but his mind was spinning with fury. He looked back up at Brenda, who was already dialing a number on her desk phone.

Within moments, two security guards appeared in the lobby, looking uneasy. Behind them walked Dr. Richard Sterling, the Chief of Staff, who had been paged about a disturbance in the reception area. Brenda smirked triumphantly, pointing a finger at Mark. "Dr. Sterling, thank goodness. This man is causing a scene and refusing to follow protocol. He’s threatening to break into the restricted wings," she complained, expecting the doctor to back her up immediately. Dr. Sterling stepped forward, his eyes scanning the tense scene. But as his gaze fell upon the man in the navy windbreaker kneeling on the floor, the color completely drained from his face.
