The Secret in the Scullery

The air in the basement kitchen of L'Etoile was thick with the scent of roasted garlic and damp stainless steel. Elena scrubbed the heavy iron pans, her tears dripping silently into the soapy water. Her forest green apron was damp, but the physical discomfort was nothing compared to the ache in her chest—and the throbbing pain along her left jawline. She had tried to hide in the shadows, believing this was her only way to stay close to her daughter, Lily.

Suddenly, the heavy swinging doors burst open. The sharp click of designer shoes echoed against the tile, followed by a heavy, familiar stride. Elena gasped, turning to see Matteo standing there in his crisp charcoal suit, his eyes scanning the room until they locked onto her. He looked entirely out of place in the industrial kitchen, a stark contrast to the grime around them.

"Matteo, what are you doing here?" Elena whispered, instinctively turning her face away to hide the dark purple bruise blooming on her skin.
"Elena, what's going on?" Matteo demanded, taking a step forward. His voice was a mixture of confusion and growing dread. "Why are you working down here? You disappeared three years ago!"

Before Elena could answer, a cold, mocking voice cut through the hum of the refrigerators. Victoria, Matteo’s wealthy fiancée, swept into the room, her black velvet gown dragging slightly on the wet floor. She looked at Elena with utter disdain.

"Come on, overreacting. She's just trying to help," Victoria dismissed with a wave of her manicured hand.

Matteo ignored his fiancée entirely. He stepped closer, his hand trembling as he gently reached out to cup Elena's chin. He turned her face to the light, gasping as he saw the bruised jaw. "Look at me," he pleaded. "Do you really want to stay down here?"

Elena’s eyes welled with fresh tears. She looked at Victoria, whose eyes flared with a silent, icy warning. But Elena couldn't keep the secret anymore.

"No," Elena whispered, her voice cracking. "She said I belong in this kitchen... because I'm the mother of your daughter."

Matteo froze. The world seemed to stop as he turned toward Victoria, his eyes burning with absolute fury.
