Matteo stood tall, stepping between Victoria and Elena. The fear that Victoria tried to weaponize no longer worked. He pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and put it on speaker.

"Detective Harris? This is Matteo. I have a confession of physical assault and extortion occurring right now in my restaurant’s kitchen. And I have security cameras recording everything."

Victoria’s face drained of color. She looked up at the corner of the kitchen, realizing too late that Matteo had recently installed high-definition security feeds with audio. Her threats, her physical assault of Elena, and her admission of extortion were all captured on digital tape.

Within minutes, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the alleyway outside. Victoria was escorted out in handcuffs, her black velvet gown rustling uselessly against the cold metal of the police cuffs. The legal contracts she had forced Elena to sign under duress were completely voided by her criminal actions.

Two weeks later, the basement kitchen was quiet, but the upper dining room of the restaurant was filled with laughter. Elena was no longer scrubbing pots in the dark. She stood in a bright, clean chef’s coat, preparing a special meal. Sitting at the family table was Lily, now three years old, coloring a picture. Matteo walked over, wrapping an arm around Elena’s shoulders as Lily looked up and smiled, calling Elena 'Mommy' for the very first time.

Matteo looked at Elena, his eyes filled with a promise of a new beginning.

"You never belonged in the basement, Elena. You belong here, with us."
