The Cold Marble Floor

The grand foyer of the Whispering Pines mansion was breathtaking, but to Clara, it was just a vast expanse of cold, unforgiving marble. Kneeling on the wet floor, her simple grey dress soaked at the knees, she scrubbed diligently with a worn-out sponge. Her hands were red, and her back ached, but she kept her head down, focused entirely on her task.

From the top of the winding staircase, Eleanor watched with a look of pure disdain. Holding a half-empty wine glass, her silk dress shimmering in the warm light, she stepped down slowly. She took a slow sip, her eyes locked on Clara's straining shoulders. To Eleanor, people like Clara were invisible, mere background characters in her glamorous life.

The heavy oak front doors swung open, and Arthur stepped inside. Clad in a tailored navy suit and carrying his leather briefcase, the successful businessman looked exhausted. He stopped dead in his tracks, his eyes darting from Clara on her knees to Eleanor standing above her.

"She's just doing what she's good at, cleaning,"

Eleanor said with a dismissive shrug, a cruel smile playing on her lips. She expected Arthur to laugh, to join in her mockery. Instead, Arthur's face turned incredibly pale, then flushed with a quiet, burning rage. He didn't say a word to Eleanor. Instead, he pulled out his phone, dialed a number, and waited for a single second before barking into the receiver:

"Cancel everything, now! The merger, the wedding plans, the bank transfers. All of it."

Eleanor's wine glass nearly slipped from her fingers. Her jaw dropped in utter confusion.

"What? Arthur, what are you talking about?"

Arthur looked at her with eyes like ice, completely devoid of the love he once claimed to have. He spoke slowly, each word cutting through the tense silence of the foyer.

"This house is no longer yours. Get out."

Clara finally paused her scrubbing, looking up with wide, tear-filled eyes as Eleanor gasped for breath.
