A Homeless Boy Gave His Only Coat to a Freezing Elderly Woman
Warmth in the Freezing Dark
The bitter winter wind howled beneath the frosty concrete highway bridge, carrying a flurry of snow that blanketed the icy pavement of the city. In the shadow of the massive overpass, a fragile shelter made of a blue plastic tarp and stacked cardboard boxes offered little protection against the sub-zero temperatures. Inside this makeshift haven, eighteen-year-old Toby sat shivering in a thin, threadbare t-shirt. His blonde buzzcut was dusted with frost, and his breath came in heavy, white plumes. Yet, his arms were wrapped tightly around Mary, a seventy-four-year-old woman with silver hair neatly tied in a bun, who had wandered into his camp hours earlier, lost and disoriented.
Mary looked up at the young man, her pale blue eyes filled with confusion and gratitude. She clutched the heavy, oversized winter coat Toby had draped over her fragile shoulders. It was the only coat he owned.
"Why would you give me your only coat, sweetheart?" Mary asked, her voice trembling with the cold.
Toby forced a gentle smile through his chattering teeth.
"Because you're freezing and you need it more than I do,"he replied softly, rubbing her arms to generate whatever warmth he could muster. He didn't care about the biting cold gnawing at his own limbs; he only cared about keeping the helpless woman alive.
Suddenly, the harsh beams of flashlights cut through the snowy darkness. A group of men in expensive, dark winter coats approached the overpass. At the front of the group was Robert, a bearded man in his mid-forties, his face etched with pure terror. Spotting the blue tarp, Robert rushed forward, slipping on the icy pavement before falling to his knees beside his mother.
"Mom. Thank God, are you alright?"Robert cried, placing a trembling hand on Mary's shoulder as tears welled in his eyes.
Toby, exhausted and weak from the cold, looked up at the wealthy stranger and pleaded,
"Please, she's been so cold. Get her somewhere warm."
