Previously: When Toby gave his only coat to a freezing elderly woman under a snowy bridge, he never expected her wealthy son to track him down with a life-changing revelation.

A Haunting Debt from the Past

Robert’s security team quickly sprang into action, wrapping Mary in heated blankets and gently lifting her to carry her toward the idling, warm SUV parked nearby. Robert turned back to thank the young stranger who had kept his mother alive in the freezing night. However, the sudden wail of approaching police sirens startled Toby. Living on the streets had taught the young man to fear authority and avoid trouble at all costs. Before Robert could offer a hand or even ask for his name, Toby retreated into the swirling blizzard, disappearing into the dark alleys of the city.

Over the next few days, Mary recovered safely at her son's estate. Though her dementia made her memory hazy, she constantly spoke of the "boy with the warm heart" who had saved her from the freezing dark. Robert was deeply haunted by the encounter. He couldn't shake the image of the shivering teenager in a t-shirt who had willingly given up his only protection against the winter elements.

Determined to find the boy, Robert hired a private investigator. Within forty-eight hours, the investigator returned with a file that shattered Robert’s world. The young man was Toby Vance, the eighteen-year-old son of Marcus Vance.

As Robert read the name, a suffocating wave of guilt washed over him. Marcus Vance had been a loyal, hard-working supervisor at Robert's real estate development firm for over a decade. Three years ago, during an aggressive corporate restructuring led by Robert himself, Marcus was abruptly laid off to cut costs. The sudden loss of income led to the foreclosure of the Vance family home. Tragically, Marcus passed away from stress-related illness shortly after, leaving young Toby orphaned, penniless, and eventually homeless. The very boy who had saved Robert's mother was on the streets because of Robert's own ruthless business decisions.
