The Interrupted Gala

The annual midsummer gala at the Sterling estate was a masterclass in high-society opulence. Soft jazz drifted through the manicured rose gardens, and champagne flowed from ice sculptures. Thomas Sterling, a wealthy hedge fund manager in his mid-forties, stood at the center of a circle of local politicians and investors. His tailored black suit was immaculate, his smile practiced and confident. Everything was perfect, until a discordant, reedy sound shattered the elegant atmosphere.

Near the grand fountain, a boy who looked no older than eighteen stood clutching a cheap, wooden flute. He wore a stained, oversized t-shirt and worn-out sneakers that looked wildly out of place on the pristine marble terrace. The wealthy guests began to whisper, stepping back as if the boy carried a plague.

Thomas felt his blood boil. This was his home, his reputation on the line. He marched over, his expensive leather shoes clicking sharply on the stone. "Hey! Get him out of here!" Thomas shouted, gesturing angrily to his security guards.

The boy stopped playing. Tears welled in his eyes, tracking lines through the dirt on his cheeks.

"Please, I need money. My mom is sick,"
he pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation.

Thomas felt no pity, only irritation. He wanted the boy gone before the mayor arrived. "Then earn it. Play," he sneered coldly, expecting the boy to run away in humiliation.

Instead, the boy slowly lowered the flute. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a creased, faded piece of paper, pressing it into Thomas's hand. Thomas looked down. It was an old photograph of a young, laughing couple holding a newborn baby. Thomas’s breath caught in his throat. The young man in the photo was him, twenty years ago.

"Where did you get this?"
Thomas whispered in shock, his hands beginning to shake.

The boy looked up at him.

"My mother said you'd know your son."
