Richard wrapped his arms around his mother, weeping with relief. Margaret had slipped away from her memory-care facility hours earlier, and the family had been searching the city in a frantic panic. As the search party moved in to help Margaret up, Richard finally took a proper look at the young man who had been holding her. Tyler was shivering uncontrollably, his lips turning a dangerous shade of blue. It was only then that Richard realized his mother was wearing a heavily worn, oversized men's coat—and Tyler was wearing nothing but a thin, threadbare shirt.

Richard's hand went to his wallet, his wealthy instincts kicking in. He pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills.

"Thank you,"

Richard said, holding out the money.

"Take this. Buy yourself a new coat, a hotel room, whatever you need. You saved my mother's life."

But Tyler shook his head, refusing to take the cash.

"I don't want your money, sir,"

Tyler whispered, his voice shaking from the hypothermia.

"I just wanted to make sure she was safe. My own grandmother passed away last winter because she couldn't afford heating. I couldn't let it happen to someone else."

The words struck Richard like a physical blow. He looked at the cash in his hand, suddenly feeling deeply ashamed of his transactional response to such pure, selfless humanity. Margaret reached out, grabbing Tyler's freezing hand with her gloved one.

"Don't leave him in the cold, Richard,"

she pleaded, her mind momentarily clear.
