The dining room of the Carter family home was always filled with warmth and the rich aroma of Sunday roast. Under the soft, golden glow of the crystal chandelier, laughter flowed as freely as the wine. To any outsider looking through the window, it was the picture-perfect scene of a happy, tight-knit suburban family. Ethan, handsome and charismatic in his crisp blue button-down shirt, was at the center of it all, sharing a hearty laugh with his father. But beneath the polished mahogany table, a dark and painful reality was unfolding.

The Secret Grip

Hidden from the cheerful eyes of the family, Ethan’s large hand was clamped like a vice around his wife Clara’s wrist. He squeezed with a quiet, calculated cruelty, pressing his fingers deep into her delicate skin. Clara, dressed in a soft floral dress that contrasted sharply with the tension in her body, trembled. She tried to pull away, but the grip only tightened. The physical pain was sharp, but the emotional agony of having to play the role of the adoring wife was far worse.

As Ethan’s laughter echoed above, Clara felt hot tears spill over her eyelashes. Her face crumpled with sudden, uncontrollable grief and panic. She looked at the man she had married, her voice barely a whisper but laced with desperate pain.

"Let go of my hand,"
she choked out, her voice breaking.

Ethan did not flinch. His bright, genial smile remained rigidly fixed on his face as he turned his head slightly toward her. His eyes, however, were completely dead, devoid of any warmth. He glared at her with a chilling intensity and whispered through his teeth,

"Smile."

But something inside Clara broke—or rather, healed. The fear that had kept her silent for two years suddenly evaporated. She wiped the tears from her cheeks, her expression hardening into absolute defiance. Looking directly into his cold eyes, she whispered fiercely,

"I'm done pretending you're kind."
