Clara pulled her hand back with a sudden burst of strength, breaking Ethan's grip. She stood up so quickly that her chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor, cutting through the dining room's laughter like a knife. The table fell dead silent. Her mother-in-law, Evelyn, blinked in surprise. "Clara, dear, is everything alright?" she asked, her voice filled with genuine concern.
