The crystal chandeliers of the penthouse apartment gleamed, casting a warm glow over the fifty-odd guests laughing and drinking champagne. It was little Lily’s second birthday, a milestone that should have been filled with pure joy. But for twenty-year-old Chloe, the evening had quickly devolved into a nightmare. Despite being the hostess and Justin's wife, she felt like an invisible ghost in her own home. Justin’s mother, Eleanor, had dominated the guest list, filling the rooms with wealthy socialites who looked right through Chloe’s modest background.

Seeking a moment of quiet, Chloe slipped into the high-end kitchen. Before she could catch her breath, Eleanor swept in, her navy blue gown rustling. With a cold, dismissive sneer, Eleanor shoved a heavy green apron into Chloe's hands and pointed to the sink overflowing with crystal glasses.

"Don't be so dramatic. She just wanted to feel useful," Eleanor sneered.

Just then, Justin, sharp and striking in his black tuxedo, walked away from the chatter of the party and entered the kitchen. His brow furrowed as he saw his wife weeping heavily, her hands trembling as she held the apron. The contrast was stark: his beautiful wife treated like hired help in their own home.

"What's going on here?" Justin demanded angrily, his voice cutting through the hum of the party.

He approached Chloe, gently taking the green apron from her hands. He looked deep into her tear-filled eyes, his heart breaking.

"Look at me. Did you really want to wash dishes during the party?" he asked softly.

Chloe looked up, her voice cracking as the humiliation poured out.

"No, she told me that my place was in the kitchen because I'm just the mother of your daughter, not a real part of this family," Chloe cried.

A dangerous silence fell over the kitchen. Furious, Justin turned to his mother, his finger pointing directly at her.

"My party is over. Get out of my house," Justin commanded, before pulling Chloe into a warm, protective hug.
