The Birthday Party That Became a Public Execution

My name is Elena Moretti, and for three years I was married to Adrian Cole, a man who believed money could buy anything, including the right to humiliate me in front of fifty of our closest friends.

It was my twenty-ninth birthday, and the Cole estate in the Hamptons glittered like a palace. Crystal chandeliers cast dancing shadows across marble floors, and the air smelled of expensive perfume and lies.

Adrian had insisted on throwing me a grand party, because appearances meant everything to him. His mother, Margaret, floated among the guests, her smile sharp as a knife. His father, Richard, held court near the bar, boasting about their billion-dollar construction empire.

I wore a simple navy dress, the one Adrian called "appropriate for someone of your background." I had chosen it myself, knowing it would make me invisible among the silk gowns and diamond necklaces.

Vanessa Hart arrived late, as she always did, sweeping into the room in a silver designer dress that caught the light like a trophy. She was Adrian's mistress, though I had known for three weeks. I had the pictures, the messages, the hotel receipts.

But I hadn't told anyone.

Vanessa walked past me, her shoulder brushing mine, and my glass of red wine tipped. The burgundy liquid splashed across the front of her dress, staining the silver fabric in a violent bloom.

"You clumsy little nobody!" Adrian's voice boomed across the ballroom. The music stopped. Conversations died. Fifty pairs of eyes turned to me.

I opened my mouth to explain, but Adrian was already calling for his security. Two men grabbed my arms, and before I could react, they had bound my wrists together with a silk rope and hoisted them above my head, tying them to a decorative beam that ran along the ceiling.

My toes barely touched the polished floor. I dangled there, my arms stretched above me, my dress riding up, my whole body exposed to the crowd.

"Maybe now you'll learn your place," Adrian said, pulling a leather riding crop from his study. He had used it on horses before, and I knew the sting of it well.

"Please," I whispered, but I didn't beg. I had learned long ago that begging only made him worse.

He brought the crop down across my back. The pain exploded through me, white-hot and blinding. I bit my lip to keep from screaming.

"Count," he ordered.

I didn't. He hit me again.

"I said count."

I closed my eyes and thought of my brothers. Dominic, who taught me to stand up for myself. Matteo, who showed me how to be ruthless. Luca, who always had a plan. Gabriel, who could find any hidden truth. Nico, who never let anyone get away with anything.

"Twenty-eight," I counted out loud, my voice steady, even as tears streamed down my face.

Vanessa stood beneath the chandelier, smiling in her ruined silver dress. Margaret laughed by the champagne tower, her voice like broken glass. Richard watched with cold approval, as if I were a disobedient dog being trained.

"Twenty-nine."

The guests watched in silence. Some had their phones out, recording. Others looked away, ashamed, but none of them moved to stop it.

"Thirty."

Adrian lowered the crop, breathing hard. Sweat beaded on his forehead. "Now apologize to Vanessa," he said.

I forced myself to look at her. "I'm sorry," I said, and then I added, "I'm sorry you think this ends here."

The ballroom went silent. Adrian's eyes narrowed. "What did you say?"

I didn't answer. I just smiled, even though my back was on fire.

Margaret stepped forward, her voice dripping with disdain. "She came from nothing, Adrian. She should be grateful we even allowed her into this family."

"Grateful," I repeated, tasting the word like poison.

Finally, a terrified employee stepped forward and cut me down. My knees nearly buckled when my feet touched the floor, but I forced myself upright. I would not fall. Not in front of them.

"Party's over," Adrian announced, raising his champagne glass.

"No," I said softly.

I walked toward the table where my purse lay, every eye following me. My phone was inside. I picked it up and dialed a number I knew by heart.

Dominic answered on the first ring. "Elena?"

"Make his entire family beg for mercy," I said.

There was a pause. Then Dominic's voice turned ice-cold. "What did he do?"

"I'll explain when you arrive."

I hung up and turned to face Adrian. "You wanted me to learn my place. Now you're about to learn yours."

Outside, the gates slammed shut. Black SUVs rolled up the driveway, their headlights flooding the ballroom windows. Adrian's face went pale.

For the first time that night, my husband looked afraid.
