A Shocking Interruption

The air in the Saint Jude Memorial Chapel was thick with the scent of lilies and grief. Friends and family sat in hushed silence, their eyes fixed on the pristine white pine casket resting on wooden trestles. But for Chloe, the Sterling family’s young maid, the solemnity was a suffocating lie. Just hours earlier, as she prepared her beloved mistress Emma for the service, she had felt a lingering warmth in Emma’s hands. When she raised her doubts to Emma’s husband, Thomas, he had dismissed her with cold fury.

Unable to shake the dread, Chloe had slipped away to the garden shed. Now, she stood at the altar, her breath coming in ragged gasps, clutching a heavy wood-splitting axe. Before anyone could stop her, she swung the axe down, splintering the polished wood of the casket. The chapel erupted into screams.

"Stop the funeral, she's not dead!" Chloe screamed desperately.

Thomas, his face contorted in a mix of rage and terror, stepped forward. "Have you lost your mind?!" he bellowed, his voice echoing off the stone walls.

"I heard her! I heard her crying!" Chloe tearfully pleaded, pointing at the jagged fracture.

A heavy silence fell over the room. Then, from within the dark depths of the fractured wood, a faint, muffled whisper arose. "No... don't do this to me..."

Chloe turned to the stunned crowd. "I washed her hair this morning, her hands were warm!"

Thomas looked around in sudden panic. "Did you hear that?" he stammered, his facade cracking. Beatrice, Emma’s elderly mother, rushed forward. She touched the fractured wood, her hands trembling. "My God... Emma?"
