An Act of Mercy in the Pouring Rain

The neon sign of the Midnight Harbor Cafe buzzed softly, casting a warm amber glow over the empty tables as a torrential autumn downpour battered the glass windows. Inside, eighteen-year-old Lance worked quietly, wiping down the polished wooden counter. He was tired, his hands worn from long shifts, but he needed this job to support his ailing grandmother. Behind him, Toby, the cafe’s cynical and cold-hearted manager, aggressively tapped at the cash register, muttering about the lack of paying customers.

Suddenly, a heavy thud against the front window made Lance jump. He looked up to see a man in a black leather jacket collapsing against the wet glass. The man’s face was bruised and bloodied, his eyes glazed with exhaustion. He slid down the pane, ending up in a heap on the wet pavement.

"Don't get involved," Toby snapped, his voice sharp and devoid of empathy. "We have customers to think about. Just ignore him."

Lance stared at the shivering figure outside. He couldn't just look away. "Something's wrong with him," Lance insisted, dropping his rag. Ignoring Toby's furious protests, he pushed open the heavy glass door and plunged into the freezing rain.

Kneeling on the wet, unforgiving pavement, Lance gently lifted the man's shoulders. "Sir? Can you hear me?" he asked, his voice trembling with concern. The man groaned, blinking through the rain. "I'm okay," he whispered, though his weak posture suggested otherwise. Lance quickly offered him a cup of warm water he had grabbed. "Take some water," Lance urged. The man drank eagerly, whispering, "Thank you. Thank you."

"Stay with me," Lance said. But before he could do more, Toby appeared at the door, his face twisted in rage. "Get back inside!" Toby yelled over the storm. Lance looked back, protesting, "He needs help!" Toby sneered, "Then you're fired." The cold words hung in the air. The stranger looked at Lance, his eyes reflecting deep gratitude. "You helped... when nobody else would," he whispered, before pulling out his phone. "Yeah. I'm outside Midnight Harbor Cafe," he spoke into the receiver.
