Previously: When eighteen-year-old Lance ran into the pouring rain to help a collapsed, bruised stranger, his heartless boss fired him on the spot. But the stranger's mysterious phone call changed everything.

The Power of a Single Phone Call

Toby slammed the cafe door shut, locking it with a sharp click and flipping the sign to 'Closed.' Lance was left standing in the freezing rain, his uniform soaked through, completely jobless. He felt a wave of panic wash over him. How was he going to pay for his grandmother's medicine now? Yet, looking down at the injured man, Lance knew he couldn't regret his decision. He helped the stranger up, guiding him under the dry awning of a closed bookstore next door.

"I am so sorry you lost your job because of me," the man said, his voice stronger now. He wiped a streak of blood and rain from his forehead. "I'm Marshall. I was mugged a few blocks away. They took my wallet and car keys, and left me for dead. Nobody on the street would even look at me."

"I'm Lance," the young waiter replied, offering a reassuring smile despite his own rising anxiety. "And don't worry about the job. If working there meant leaving a human being to freeze in the street, then it wasn't a place I wanted to be anyway."

Before Marshall could reply, the glare of bright headlights illuminated the dark street. Three sleek, black SUVs pulled up to the curb, their tires splashing water onto the sidewalk. Several men in dark suits quickly stepped out, holding large umbrellas. One of them rushed forward, his face pale with concern. "Mr. Vance! We've been looking everywhere for you!"

Lance watched in utter disbelief. The bruised stranger he had just saved wasn't a homeless man or a drifter. He was Marshall Vance, the billionaire real estate mogul who owned half the commercial properties in the city—including the very building Midnight Harbor Cafe occupied. Marshall looked at Lance with a knowing smile. "It seems my ride is here, Lance. And we have some business to discuss."
