My Late Father Told Me to Stand Before a Charging Black Bull and Hold This Bandana
Previously: When 18-year-old Austin stepped into the path of a massive, charging bull holding only his late father’s old red bandana, the entire rodeo arena held its breath for a miracle.
A Legacy of Lies
The silence in the arena was deafening. No one moved. Mitch scrambled down the metal stairs, his boots clattering loudly against the steel. He threw open the arena gate, his face pale and sweat-streaked.
"Austin, step away from that animal right now!" Mitch demanded, his voice shaking. "He's a killer. He's going to the slaughterhouse tonight!"
But Ranger stepped forward, placing his massive body between Austin and Mitch, letting out a low, warning rumble. Austin looked from his stepfather to the bull, sensing a deep bond that defied explanation.
"Why do you want him dead so badly, Mitch?" Austin asked, holding the red bandana tight. "My dad loved this bull. He told me Ranger would protect me."
Mitch sneered, though his eyes darted nervously to the crowd of onlookers gathering at the fence.
"Your father was a thief, Austin," Mitch hissed. "He stole this land, and he stole that bull from my brother. That bandana was the proof of ownership, and your dad hid it to ruin us!"
Austin's heart shattered. He couldn't believe his heroic father was a thief. But as he clutched the bandana, his thumb brushed against a stiff, hard lump sewn into the thick hem of the fabric. Acting on instinct, Austin used his teeth to tear the threads of the hem. A small, brass key slipped out into his palm.
Mitch’s eyes went wide with pure terror.
"Give me that key, Austin!" Mitch lunged, but Ranger snorted loudly, stomping his hoof, forcing Mitch to stumble backward into the dirt.
Austin realized the key must unlock the old roll-top desk in his father's private study—a desk Mitch had spent weeks trying to pry open. Austin backed away toward the arena exit, protected by the giant bull. He had to find out what his father had truly left behind.
