Previously: A corrupt lawyer tries to steal a billionaire's fortune with a forged paternity test. But a 7-year-old boy holds the key to the truth — and it changes everything.

The morning light found me in the study, surrounded by files that had been hidden for seven years.

The investigator had come through. The police report. The mechanic's testimony. The grainy security footage from a gas station near the crash site — a car following Elena's, matching the description of Preston's black sedan.

I had enough to bury him. But I wanted more.

I wanted the truth.

Lucas came in, holding a cup of juice, his small face still marked by the night's tears. "Did you find out, Dad?"

I pulled him onto my lap. "I found out enough to know that the man who tried to take you from me is the same man who took your mother."

His lip quivered. "So she didn't leave us?"

"No, buddy. She never left us. She was taken."

We sat there in silence for a long moment, the weight of it settling over us. Then I made a decision.

"I'm going to face him," I said. "I'm going to look him in the eye and make sure he knows that he lost everything."

Lucas shook his head. "I want to come with you."

"No."

"Please, Dad. I want to see him pay."

I looked at my son — this boy who had faced down a corrupt lawyer with nothing but a music box and the truth. And I knew that he was stronger than I had ever been.

"Okay," I said. "But you stay behind me. No matter what."

The interrogation room was cold and bare. Preston sat at the table, his lawyer at his side, but the arrogance was gone. He looked like a man who had finally realized the walls were closing in.

I placed the folder on the table, the contents spilling out. "I know what you did to Elena."

His lawyer started to speak, but Preston cut him off. "You can't prove anything."

"I can prove the brake lines were cut," I said. "I can prove you were there. And I can prove you took a five-million-dollar bribe to fake a DNA test."

Preston's jaw tightened. "You're bluffing."

"I don't bluff," I said. "And I don't forget. You tried to take my son. You took my wife. And now I'm going to take everything you have."

Lucas stepped forward, his voice small but steady. "My mom used to say that the truth always wins."

Preston looked at the boy, and for the first time, I saw fear in his eyes. Real fear.

"She was right," Lucas said.

The trial lasted six months. The evidence was overwhelming — the DNA certificate, the bank records, the surveillance footage, and a witness who had seen Preston near Elena's car the night before the crash. The jury deliberated for only three hours.

Preston Vane was convicted of second-degree murder and attempted fraud. He was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

I stood in the courtroom, my arm around Lucas, as the judge read the verdict. And when the gavel came down, I felt a weight lift off my shoulders that I had carried for seven years.

That night, we went home to the atrium, and Lucas placed the music box back on the shelf. "I think Mom would be proud," he said.

I knelt beside him. "She would be. And so am I."

He looked at me with those big blue eyes, so much like his mother's. "What happens now?"

"Now," I said, "we live. We honor her memory. And we never let anyone tear us apart again."

He hugged me, and I hugged him back, feeling the peace that comes with justice. The empire was mine again, but more than that — I had my son.

And that was the only treasure I would ever need.
