The Boy in the Field

The heavy, low rumble of motorcycle engines filled the cool autumn air. Gunnar sat on his custom chopper, his leather vest worn and covered in patches that told the story of a lifetime on the road. Around him, the members of his motorcycle club, the Iron Brotherhood, laughed and shared stories in the wide, grassy field. But the peace of the afternoon was suddenly shattered when a small figure emerged from the tall weeds at the edge of the clearing.

It was a little boy, no older than seven, running as fast as his small legs could carry him. He wore a dirty black t-shirt, and his messy blonde hair flew in the wind. In his arms, he clutched something tightly to his chest. Suddenly, the boy tripped over a hidden root, tumbling hard onto the damp grass. He didn't cry. Instead, he scrambled quickly to his feet, his eyes locked onto Gunnar.

He ran right up to the burly, bearded biker and held out a beautifully detailed wooden toy motorcycle. Tears welled in his large, blue eyes.

"Please sir, buy it," the boy pleaded, his voice cracking with desperation.

Gunnar, a man who rarely showed emotion, felt a strange tug in his chest. He slowly knelt down in the grass, bringing himself to the boy's eye level. He gently took the wooden toy, admiring the intricate carvings that looked incredibly, painfully familiar.

"Who made this, kid?" Gunnar asked, his voice softer than his brothers had ever heard it.
"My dad," the boy sobbed, wiping his eyes with a dirty sleeve.

Gunnar stared at the bottom of the wooden toy. Carved into the base were the initials T.M.—Thomas Miller. Gunnar's breath caught in his throat. He looked back up at the crying child, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"What's his name?" Gunnar whispered, his hands beginning to tremble.

The boy looked up at him, his lips trembling violently as a fresh wave of tears spilled over.

"He said if he died, I should find the biker who is my father," the boy cried.
