An Unexpected Guest

The grand ballroom was filled with the scent of white roses and the soft hum of classical music. Esteban stood at the altar, looking at his beautiful bride-to-be, Victoria. Everything was perfect, just as his wealthy family had planned. But as the priest began to speak, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel creaked open. A tiny figure stepped onto the plush carpet. It was a little girl, no older than six, wearing a simple cream dress and clutching a framed photograph to her chest. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks as she walked slowly down the aisle, ignoring the gasps of the prestigious guests.

Victoria hissed under her breath, demanding that security remove the child immediately. But Esteban raised his hand, stopping the ushers. There was something desperately familiar about the girl's big, expressive eyes. As she reached the altar, she looked up at Esteban, her voice trembling with pure, unadulterated grief.

"I don't want money for myself," the little girl sobbed, holding up the black-and-white picture. "I only want my mom not to go to heaven."

Esteban knelt down, his heart hammering against his ribs. He gently took the photograph from her small hands. The moment his eyes fell upon the image, the world around him faded into complete silence. Staring back at him was Sarah—the woman he had loved with all his soul, the woman who had vanished without a trace six years ago. "What's your mom's name?" Esteban asked, his voice barely a whisper.

"Sarah," the girl replied, wiping her nose. "She's very sick in the hospital."

Without a single look back at his screaming bride or his furious parents, Esteban stood up, grabbed the little girl's hand, and ran out of the church. He sped through the city streets to the local hospital, his wedding suit feeling suffocating. He burst into the sterile, dimly lit room where a pale woman lay motionless on the bed. As he rushed to her side, her eyes fluttered open. "Esteban?" she whispered weakly.

"Esteban?" she whispered weakly.
