A Little Girl Interrupted My Wedding With a Photo That Changed My Life Forever
An Unexpected Guest
The scent of fresh white roses filled the grand chapel, but Esteban’s heart felt strangely heavy. He stood at the altar in his tailored dark navy blue suit, looking at his beautiful fiancée, Vanessa, who smiled beneath her silk veil. The soft violin music was supposed to signal the beginning of their perfect, high-society life together. But just as the priest began to speak, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel creaked open.
A tiny figure stepped onto the flower-lined wedding aisle. It was Lily, a young girl no older than six, her golden curls bouncing as she walked forward. She wasn't wearing bridesmaid attire, but a simple, slightly worn beige lace dress. In her small, trembling hands, she clutched a crumpled black-and-white photograph. The entire congregation gasped in hushed whispers, but Lily didn't look at them. Her tear-streaked face was fixed entirely on Esteban.
"I don't want money for myself," Lily sobbed, her voice echoing off the stained-glass windows. "I only want my mom not to go to heaven."
Esteban’s chest tightened. He stepped down from the altar, ignoring Vanessa’s sharp, warning hiss. He knelt before the weeping child, his heart hammering against his ribs. When he looked at the photograph Lily held, his breath caught in his throat. It was Sarah. The dark brown hair, the gentle eyes, the smile he had spent seven years trying to forget. She was his college sweetheart, the woman who had mysteriously vanished from his life without a trace.
"What's your mom's name?" Esteban asked, his voice trembling as a cold dread washed over him.
"Her name is Sarah," Lily whispered, wiping a tear. "She's very sick in the hospital."
Leaving a screaming Vanessa and a room full of outraged guests behind, Esteban ran out of the church. Within twenty minutes, he was sprinting through the sterile, fluorescent-lit hallways of the city hospital. He pushed open the door to Room 304. There, pale and fragile beneath the white sheets, lay Sarah. As the door clicked, she weakly opened her eyes, staring at the man in the navy suit.
"Esteban?" she whispered, her voice barely a breath.
