Previously: When eight-year-old Lily interrupted Esteban's wedding holding a crumpled photograph, she wasn't looking for money. She was looking for the only man who could save her dying mother.

The Secret of the Past

Esteban fell to his knees beside the hospital bed, grasping Sarah’s cold, frail hand. Tears welled in his eyes as he looked at the woman he had loved so deeply. "Why did you leave me, Sarah?" he pleaded, his voice thick with years of accumulated grief. "Why didn't you tell me you were sick? Why did you disappear?"

Sarah closed her eyes, a tear escaping and slipping down her hollow cheek. She looked toward Lily, who had crept into the room and was holding onto Esteban's suit jacket for comfort. "I had no choice, Esteban," Sarah whispered weakly. "Eight years ago, right after we got engaged, I found out I was pregnant with Lily. I was so excited to tell you, but then I received a visit from Vanessa."

Esteban stiffened. Vanessa, the woman he had just left standing at the altar. "Vanessa?" he echoed, his mind reeling.

Sarah nodded slowly. "She knew my family was struggling financially. She told me that if I didn't leave the city and give you up, her father would use his influence to ruin your medical residency. She showed me legal documents, threatening to tie me up in lawsuits I couldn't afford. I was terrified, Esteban. I was young, pregnant, and sick. I didn't want to destroy your dream of becoming a surgeon. So, I took Lily and ran."

The revelation hit Esteban like a physical blow. The woman he was about to marry was the very monster who had stolen his family from him. Vanessa had orchestrated the entire tragedy, pretending to be his comfort while secretly keeping him away from his true love and his own daughter. He looked down at Lily, seeing his own eyes reflected in her innocent face. "Lily is my daughter?" he asked, his heart bursting with a mixture of profound love and overwhelming rage.

Before Sarah could answer, the hospital room door slammed open. Vanessa stood in the doorway, her white wedding dress trailing on the linoleum floor, her face twisted in anger.
