The Unwelcome Reunion

The soapy water stung the small cuts on Emily’s hands, but she barely felt the physical pain. Her chest ached with a heavy, hollow sadness that no amount of scrubbing could wash away. Dressed in a stiff navy maid’s uniform that felt three sizes too small for her pride, she knelt on the cold, checkered marble floor of the Henderson mansion. This was her third week working for the agency, and she had spent every day keeping her head down, trying to survive. She wiped a stray tear from her cheek with the back of her wet sleeve, leaving a streak of soap residue across her face.

Suddenly, the massive oak front doors swung open, letting in a draft of cool autumn air. Emily didn't look up immediately, continuing to scrub the floor with frantic energy. But the heavy, decisive footsteps halted abruptly. A sharp gasp echoed through the high-ceilinged foyer. Emily slowly lifted her gaze, her eyes wide and glistening with unshed tears. Standing just feet away from her was a tall, distinguished Caucasian man in a sleek black suit. His face had gone completely pale, his jaw slack with utter disbelief.

"Dad?"

The word slipped from Emily's lips before she could stop it, a fragile whisper that seemed to shatter the silence of the grand entrance. William stared down at her, his eyes darting from her tear-stained face to the bucket of dirty water beside her knees. For a second, time stood still. But the reality of her position rushed back over Emily like a wave of ice water. Terrified of what this meant, she quickly lower her head, sobbing quietly as she began to scrub the marble floor again, her shoulders shaking.

Before William could speak, the soft click of heels sounded from the curved white staircase. Catherine, elegant and poised in a silk dress, descended while holding a crystal wine glass. She looked at William with a tight, practiced smile.

"You're home so early, darling,"

she said, her voice dripping with polished mansion tones. Emily kept her eyes locked on the floor, her heart hammering against her ribs. Her father was married to another woman, living in a palace, while she was scrubbing his floors.
