A Maid Kneels in Her Father's Mansion Until a Shocking Secret Comes to Light
Previously: When Emily took a job as a maid for a wealthy family, she never expected her estranged father to walk through the front door—or to uncover the truth about her past.
The Price of Secrets
William cleared his throat, his voice tight as he tried to regain his composure. He stepped around the wet patch on the floor, refusing to look directly at Emily again. "Just some early meetings wrapped up, Catherine," he lied, his voice trembling slightly as he walked toward his wife and kissed her cheek. Catherine’s sharp eyes darted from her husband’s pale face to the young maid trembling on the floor. She frowned, sensing the thick tension in the room, but decided not to press the issue in front of the staff. With a dismissive wave, she ordered Emily to finish up and leave for the day.
Emily practically ran to the staff locker room, her mind spinning. Ten years ago, her father had walked out on her and her mother, leaving them with nothing but a mountain of debt. Her mother had worked herself to an early grave trying to pay it off, while William had vanished without a trace. Now, here he was, married into one of the wealthiest families in the city, living a lie. Emily clutched her coat, preparing to slip out the back door, when a hand firmly gripped her wrist.
She spun around to find William standing in the dim hallway of the servant's quarters. His polished exterior was gone, replaced by a desperate, panicked expression.
"Emily, please, you have to listen to me,"
he whispered fiercely, looking over his shoulder to ensure they were alone. "You can't tell Catherine who you are. She thinks I have no family, no past. If she finds out about my previous marriage, her father will strip me of my position at the firm. I will lose everything." Emily looked at the man she once idolized, realizing he was nothing but a coward who had traded his own daughter for a life of luxury.
