A Ghost from the Past

The afternoon sun beat down on the dusty gravel of the country yard, casting long, warm shadows across the wooden fence where a few onlookers stood watching in low, curious voices. Emily wiped a bead of sweat from her forehead, her hands soapy as she scrubbed a heavy cotton sheet in the rustic metal washbasin. Her life was simple now, built on the hard soil of this quiet town, far away from the glittering, high-stakes world she had once known. She wore a faded denim shirt and a stained apron, her blonde hair tied back in a messy bun. It was a peaceful existence, one she had fought bitterly to build from the ashes of a broken heart.

Suddenly, the low rumble of an engine broke the afternoon quiet. A sleek, polished black sedan rolled into the driveway, its tires crunching heavily on the dry gravel. The onlookers went silent, watching with wide eyes. Emily froze, her wet hands hovering over the basin. Her heart hammered against her ribs as the driver’s side door swung open. A man stepped out, his tailored dark suit looking entirely out of place in the rustic setting.

It was Andrew. His clean-cut jawline and piercing blue eyes hadn't changed, though there was a new tiredness etched around his mouth. Emily felt the air leave her lungs. She whispered, "It's you."

Before Andrew could speak, the screen door of the porch creaked open. Seven-year-old Luke stepped out, walking forward with cautious curiosity. He looked at the stranger, then at his mother’s pale face.

"Mom?"
the boy asked softly. Andrew’s gaze shifted from Emily to the child. His eyes widened, tracking the boy's features—features that were a mirror image of his own childhood photographs. Andrew took a step forward, his voice trembling as he looked back at Emily.
"Is he my son?"
