The Man Who Left Her Years Ago Suddenly Returns to Claim Her Son
Previously: When Andrew abandoned Emily seven years ago, he left her with nothing but a broken heart and a secret pregnancy. Now, he's back with a demand that changes everything.
Unearthing the Lies
Emily stood like a protective shield in front of Luke, her arms wrapped tightly around her chest.
"Luke, go inside and finish your homework,"she commanded, her voice shaking but firm. The boy hesitated, looking between the tall stranger in the suit and his mother’s pale, terrified face, before scurrying back into the safety of the house. Once the screen door clicked shut, Emily turned on Andrew, her eyes flashing with a mixture of fear and deep-seated fury.
"How dare you show up here after seven years?"she hissed, stepping closer so the onlookers by the fence couldn't hear her trembling voice.
"You walked away. You ignored my calls, my letters. You chose your family’s fortune over us. And now you want to ask if he’s yours?"
Andrew looked as if he had been struck. He reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a faded, yellowed envelope.
"I never received any letters, Emily,"he said, his voice cracking with emotion.
"Until last week, when my mother passed away. I was cleaning out her safe-deposit box, and I found these."He held out a stack of unopened envelopes, all written in Emily’s neat, distinctive handwriting.
"She intercepted them. She told me you had taken a settlement from our family and moved to Europe with another man. She made me believe you hated me."
Emily stared at the letters, the world spinning around her. The agonizing months she had spent crying herself to sleep, believing Andrew had abandoned his unborn child for a wealthy inheritance, had all been a cruel fabrication. His mother had orchestrated the entire separation to keep a middle-class girl from marrying into their prestigious family.
"She lied to us,"Emily whispered, the weight of seven lost years crushing down on her.
"She stole our life."
