A Hero in Black Gloves

The morning rush at the Golden Griddle Diner was always chaotic, but today the air felt exceptionally heavy. Under the bright, fluorescent lights of the bustling neighborhood diner, families chatted and silverware clattered. Sitting at a corner booth was young Mason, wearing a bright yellow hoodie, happily eating breakfast with his father, Philip. In the open kitchen, Hunter, a quiet teenage prep cook in a charcoal grey t-shirt and black gloves, was working tirelessly to keep up with the endless orders. Watching over everyone like a hawk was Gregory, the bald, notoriously short-tempered manager whose only concern was the clock.

Suddenly, the cheerful atmosphere shattered. Mason’s eyes widened in sheer panic as he gripped his throat, unable to draw a single breath. He was choking. Philip leaped up, screaming for help as horror paralyzed the surrounding tables. Hearing the commotion, Hunter looked up from the grill. Instantly recognizing the universal sign of choking, the young prep cook threw down his spatula and prepared to jump into action.

"Get back to work!" Gregory barked, stepping in Hunter’s way. "We have orders backing up! Let them handle it!"

Ignoring his boss's cruel command, Hunter pushed past Gregory and rushed out of the kitchen. He got behind the terrified boy, locked his hands just below Mason's ribcage, and performed the Heimlich maneuver with steady, practiced precision. On the third thrust, the obstruction cleared, and Mason gasped, drawing in a loud, desperate breath of air. Philip collapsed into the booth, weeping with relief as he held his son close.

But the relief was short-lived. Gregory marched over, his face flushed with anger. Looking down at Hunter, he sneered coldly.

"You disobeyed a direct order and abandoned your station. You're fired. Pack your things and get out."

Before Hunter could even process the injustice, Philip stood up. He firmly grabbed Hunter's arm, staring Gregory down with intense fury. Pulling out his phone, Philip dialed a number and spoke with absolute authority.

"This young man just saved a child's life. Yes, this is Dr. Michael Carter. I need an emergency board meeting called immediately."
