The Pendant Light Flickered as Vanessa's Heels Clicked Across the Marble Floor

The rain streaked down the penthouse windows, turning the skyline into a blur of gray and gold. I stood at the head of the table, my hands gripping the leather chair, watching the woman I once trusted circle my son like a hawk.

Vanessa's emerald dress caught the warm overhead light, but her eyes were cold as she stopped in front of Lucas. She flicked her hair over her shoulder and placed a single sheet of paper on the black granite table.

The sound of it hitting the stone was like a gunshot.

"This child is a fraud," she said, her voice slow and deliberate, tasting every word. Her nostrils flared as she pointed a manicured finger at Lucas, who was kneeling by the table, his big blue eyes fixed on the floor.

I watched my son flinch, his lower lip trembling, but he didn't cry. Not yet. He clutched a small leather pouch with a brass key, and I knew that pouch held something important. Something Vanessa had no idea about.

"Roman," she continued, turning to me with a cruel smile, "I have the DNA results. This boy is not yours. He's a plant, a scheme to steal your company. I'm doing this for us."

I narrowed my eyes, but I didn't speak. I wanted to see how far she would go.

Vanessa slid the paper toward me. "I've already filed the custody waiver. He gets nothing. You get nothing, boy. Pack your little toys and go home."

Lucas looked up, and for a moment, I saw something in his eyes that wasn't fear. It was resolve. He slowly reached into the leather pouch and pulled out a blue envelope sealed with wax.

"Dad," he said, his voice shaky but clear, "look inside this blue folder."

Vanessa's smirk faltered. Her eyes darted to the envelope, and she took a half-step back. "What is that?" she demanded.

I stepped forward, my hand reaching out. The wax was cold under my fingertips, and as I broke the seal, the room seemed to hold its breath.

I pulled out a single sheet of paper, gold-embossed at the top: Supreme Court DNA Certificate. The numbers blurred for a second, then sharpened. 99.9998% biological paternity match.

My son. My son.

Below that, another paper: a bank receipt for a fifty-thousand-dollar bribe to a private lab clerk. The signature on the receipt was unmistakable. Vanessa's.

I looked up, and my voice was a thunderclap. "Your forgery is completely exposed."

Vanessa's face drained of all color. Her lips parted, but no sound came out. Beads of sweat dotted her temple, and she swayed on her heels.

Lucas exhaled softly, and I pulled him into my arms. "You get nothing, pack up," I said to Vanessa, and as I spoke, two uniformed officers stepped into the boardroom, their hands ready.

Vanessa's eyes went wide, and she started backing away. "You can't do this, Roman! I have proof! I have—"

"You have nothing," I cut her off. "The only proof in this room is the truth, and it's standing right here."

The officers took her by the wrists, and she was led out, her heels scraping against the floor, her head turning back one last time with a look of pure hatred.

But as the door clicked shut, I felt a chill that had nothing to do with the rain outside. This wasn't over. I knew Vanessa too well. She wouldn't go down without a fight.
