The sterile, hushed elegance of the airport’s first-class lounge was a stark contrast to the tempest raging outside. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, distorting the amber glow of the runway lights into shimmering rivers. Inside, the air was thick with the low rumble of distant jets and the scent of expensive leather. I, Samuel, a 24-year-old waitress, was just trying to get through my shift, my neat chignon betraying a few damp strands of hair clinging to my neck. My ivory silk vest felt too tight, a constant reminder of the exhausting hours.

Then, Carter Ross, a notorious lieutenant of the mafia boss Thomas Wright, decided to make his presence known. He was all sharp angles and predatory smirks, his charcoal pinstripe suit impeccable. He deliberately bumped into me, sending my tray of crystal flutes crashing to the floor. The sound of shattering glass was deafening, followed almost instantly by the sharp crack of his open palm across my face. My head snapped back, the pain immediate and searing. Blood welled on my split lip, and tears blurred my vision as I instinctively clutched my stinging cheek. Carter’s venomous words cut deeper than the slap: “Know your place, clumsy peasant, before I leave your corpse on the runway tarmac!”

I remained frozen, paralyzed by shock and pain. Across the room, Thomas Wright, the formidable boss himself, watched from his armchair. His silver-streaked hair was neatly combed, his steel-blue eyes, usually conveying aristocratic authority, narrowed into lethal slits. He said nothing, but his gaze was a palpable weight.

It was then that the real drama unfolded. Mr. Wright rose, his movements unnervingly smooth. He set down his drink with a deliberate clink. “You dare strike a working woman under my personal protection, Carter?” His voice was a low, chilling rumble, devoid of the earlier warmth I’d sometimes heard. Carter froze, his arrogant smirk vanishing, replaced by a dawning panic. I could only kneel amidst the glass shards, my shoulders trembling, my breath catching in my throat.
