The Unseen Storm

The sterile opulence of the first-class lounge was a stark contrast to the tempest raging outside. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, each droplet a tiny hammer against the glass, mirroring the frantic beat of Hannah’s own heart. The city lights below bled into abstract streaks of amber and cyan, a mesmerizing, yet isolating, spectacle. Hannah, a young woman barely out of her teens, stood by the polished Nero Marquina table, her slender frame taut with exhaustion. Her porcelain face, dusted with faint freckles, bore the tell-tale signs of too many late nights and too little sleep. Her auburn hair, usually neatly pinned, felt loose and unruly. Her uniform – a crisp white shirt and a severe black pencil skirt – did little to hide the tremble in her hands as she balanced a tray laden with crystal champagne flutes. She was a ghost in this gilded cage, serving beings who existed on a different plane.

Across from her sat Victoria Sterling, a woman carved from sharp angles and ambition. Her raven hair was slicked back, revealing a jawline that could cut glass. Her hazel eyes, hooded and cold, surveyed Hannah with undisguised contempt. Dressed in an immaculate charcoal pinstripe suit, adorned with a blood-red silk tie and a solid gold pinky ring, she radiated an aura of ruthless power. Beside her, reclining in a deep leather armchair, was Salvatore Moretti. Even in repose, the Don was an imposing figure. His sixty-two years had etched a roadmap of scars onto his rugged features, testament to a life lived on the edge. His steel-gray hair was slicked back, his arctic-blue eyes piercing, missing nothing. He wore an unbuttoned cashmere overcoat, the dark Italian suit beneath speaking of quiet, unassailable authority. The air crackled with unspoken tension, thick with the scent of expensive cologne and impending doom.

“Watch where you place your filthy hands, peasant,” Victoria Sterling sneered, her voice dripping with malice.

Hannah flinched as Victoria deliberately knocked the water glass aside with the back of her hand. The crystal clattered against the marble, a small sound amplified by the charged silence. Tears welled in Hannah’s eyes, blurring the already distorted view of the rain-streaked windows. She remained silent, her breath catching in her throat, a rabbit caught in the headlights of a speeding car. Salvatore Moretti remained motionless, his arctic-blue eyes narrowed, observing the scene with an unnerving stillness that spoke volumes more than any outburst could.
