Eleanor’s face contorted with rage as the warmth of the kitchen dissolved into a bitter standoff.

"You are throwing your own mother out? For her?"

she hissed, gesturing wildly toward Chloe. The commotion had drawn the attention of the guests in the living room. Conversations died down, and curious eyes peered through the glass doors.

Justin didn’t back down. He kept one arm firmly around Chloe’s shoulders.

"I told you to leave, Mother. You insulted the woman I love in our own home. I won't tolerate your cruelty anymore,"

he said, his voice steady but laced with steel.

Eleanor stepped closer, her purple silk dress rustling. She lowered her voice, but her words were sharp enough to cut.

"You are throwing away your inheritance, Justin. If you marry this girl, your father and I will cut you off completely. She is a waitress's daughter! She trapped you with that child, and you are ruining our family name!"

The crowd of guests gasped. The ugly truth was out. Eleanor had never accepted Chloe, viewing her only as a lower-class interloper who had used her pregnancy to climb the social ladder. Chloe clung to Justin, fresh tears spilling over her eyelashes. She had spent two years trying to win Eleanor’s approval, only to be humiliated on the night meant to celebrate their future.

But Justin didn't hesitate. He looked at his mother with utter disappointment.

"My wealth comes from my own hard work, not your inheritance,"

Justin replied coldly.

"And Chloe didn't trap me. We built a beautiful family together, and she is the best thing that ever happened to me. If you can't respect her, you have no place in my life, or my daughter's."

Realizing she had lost her leverage, Eleanor sneered, grabbed her designer purse, and marched out of the house, slamming the door behind her. The party was effectively over, but the real challenge for Justin and Chloe was just beginning.
