Previously: When Julian's ambition led him to hide his disabled wife from society, he had no idea she held the keys to the very empire he desperately wanted to conquer.

The Mask Falls Away

Julian tried to scramble further up the steps, his hands gripping the cold marble. "Clara, you don't understand! Let me explain, please!" he begged, his polished corporate persona completely disintegrating. But before he could reach the landing, two burly security guards in dark suits stepped forward, silently blocking his path. Julian collapsed back onto his knees, looking around the room in sheer panic.

Clara spoke again, her voice echoing through the state-of-the-art sound system. "For two years, my husband told his colleagues that I was institutionalized," she announced to the crowd. "He told his boss that the grief of my accident had made me mentally unstable. He did this so he wouldn't have to bring his disabled wife to company dinners. He did this to hide me."

The whispers in the crowd turned into murmurs of disgust. Standing near the front of the stage was Arthur Sterling, the CEO of Sterling Financial and Julian’s boss. Arthur’s face was red with anger. He had personally promoted Julian based on the lie of his tragic, isolated home life.

"Clara, I loved you!" Julian cried out, a desperate attempt to salvage his reputation. "I was trying to protect our privacy!"

"You were protecting your greed,"
Clara countered coldly. "You didn't know that my family founded the Vanguard Group. I lived simply because I wanted to find someone who loved me for who I was, not my family's wealth. But when I lost the use of my legs, you saw me as a liability. You even drafted divorce papers to leave me penniless while you chased my family's corporate favor."

Julian stared at her, the horrific realization washing over him. The mysterious billionaire chairperson he had spent months trying to impress was the very wife he had locked in the back room of their home. His career, his social standing, and his entire future were dissolving in front of his eyes.
