A Spark of Hope on the Lawn

The afternoon sun cast long, golden shadows across the pristine green lawn of the Sterling estate. For three long years, Lily had looked at this beautiful garden from the confines of her wheelchair, feeling like a ghost in her own life. At nineteen, she had resigned herself to a lifetime of immobility. But today, her childhood best friend, Toby, had insisted on bringing her outside, carrying a simple white basin filled with warm water.

Toby knelt on the soft grass, his orange t-shirt bright against the green lawn. Gently, he lifted Lily’s pale feet and placed them into the water. Lily looked down, her blonde wavy hair falling over her shoulders, a mixture of confusion and anxiety clouding her face. Toby looked up at her, his dark brown curly hair framing a face filled with intense devotion.

"Don't be scared. Just trust me a little, okay?"

He began to massage her feet with a strange, clear gel he had brought with him. As his fingers worked the substance into her skin, Lily’s breath hitched. A sudden, sharp warmth bloomed in her soles—a sensation she hadn't felt since the devastating car crash that took her mother’s life. Her eyes went wide, and she gasped, looking toward the grand brick house. She whispered, her voice trembling:

"Wait."

In the background, David, her stepfather, was running excitedly—or rather, frantically—across the lawn. He wore his signature dark blue suit, but his face was twisted in a mask of pure panic. Lily paid him no mind. She stared down at her feet, tears of disbelief spilling over her cheeks.

"I feel it. Something's different."

For the first time in years, the heavy, dead weight in her legs felt like it was beginning to lift, replaced by a tingling current of pure electricity.
