The Sabotage

The air in the Swiss clinic was crisp, the morning sun casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished marble terrace. Victor Sterling, a man defined by sharp angles and a quiet intensity, sat in a mobility chair. His dark hair was silver-templed, his attire impeccable—a black cashmere turtleneck and charcoal trousers that did little to hide the menacing carbon-titanium robotic brace encasing his right leg. His cousin, Damon, stood behind him, a stark contrast with his slick blonde hair and a tan suede blazer, his smile a practiced, insincere mask. Beside Victor’s injured leg knelt Maya, a nine-year-old orphan girl. Her faded blue pinafore was smudged with dust, her small hands clutching a tiny brass wrench, a relic from her late father’s watchmaker tools. The catalyst for the unfolding drama was a seemingly innocuous silver tension pin on the knee joint of Victor’s advanced brace, deliberately loosened.

The scene began with Maya tapping the lateral knee joint. Damon lunged forward, his voice a harsh, condescending bark. “Beat it, street rat! Don’t get your dirty hands on my cousin’s hundred-thousand-dollar medical brace!” Victor remained impassive, his piercing dark eyes fixed on Maya, a flicker of curiosity in their depths as he observed her fearless stance. Ignoring Damon’s outburst, Maya pointed a small finger at a protruding silver pin near the brace’s hydraulic hinge. Her voice, clear and earnest, cut through the tension. “Mister, your legs aren’t broken—someone unscrewed this silver locking pin three turns so the hinge pinches your nerve every time you try to stand!” Damon froze, his eyes widening in sudden terror, his Adam’s apple bobbing nervously. Victor’s gaze shifted to the pin. He reached down, his fingers tracing the fresh scratch marks around the bolt head, noting a dab of clear grease that eerily matched the cuff of Damon’s suede jacket. “My father’s watchmaker taught me about micro-pins…” Victor’s voice dropped to a low, lethal rumble. “And only one person cleans my brace every night before the board vote.” Maya, sensing the shift, stepped back beside Victor’s chair, her grip tightening on the brass wrench.
