The Confrontation

With a decisive twist, Maya used her small brass wrench to tighten the silver pin. The sharp metallic click echoed in the sudden silence. Victor gripped the armrests, and with a surge of power that defied his recent trauma, rose to his full six-foot-two height without a trace of pain. Damon, his face a mask of panic, tried to back away. “Victor, wait,” he stammered, his voice cracking into a high-pitched wail, “the board was going to make me CEO if you stayed in that chair!” Victor, his eyes now burning with a cold fury, didn’t release Damon’s wrist. The board vote was tomorrow; Damon’s desperate gamble had been to ensure Victor’s incapacitation, paving the way for his own ascension to the CEO position. Victor had suspected foul play, but the meticulousness of the sabotage, and the audacity of his own cousin, was staggering. Maya stood silently beside the chair, a small, steady presence in the storm.

“You thought a loose pin would be enough?” Victor’s voice was dangerously quiet. “You underestimated me. You underestimated her.” He nodded towards Maya.

Victor signaled two clinic security officers who had been discreetly observing. As they approached Damon, the veneer of his arrogance crumbled completely, replaced by raw fear. He knew Victor, once recovered, would not be merciful. Victor then turned his attention to Maya. He knelt, bringing himself to her eye level. The cashmere coat was draped over her small shoulders, a stark contrast to her dusty pinafore. His voice, now warm and deeply grateful, filled the space between them. “You just saved my legs and my company, little mechanic—from today on, you’ll never walk barefoot or hungry again.” But even as he spoke, Victor knew the danger had only intensified. Damon’s desperate act was a symptom of a deeper rot within the company, fueled by his ambition and perhaps others who stood to gain from Victor’s downfall. Damon’s network was extensive, and his desperation meant he would stop at nothing. Protecting Maya, and dismantling Damon’s conspiracy, had become Victor’s immediate priority.
