With shaking hands, David unpinned the note and unfolded it. His chest tightened as he read his late wife's elegant cursive handwriting. The words shattered everything he thought he knew about his life.

"David, if you are reading this, it means Chloe found him. This is Leo. He is your son, David. Five years ago, I didn't die in that river. My family's dark past caught up to us, and a dangerous group threatened to kill you and Chloe if I didn't disappear forever. I was pregnant with Leo when I fled. I have kept him hidden and safe all these years, but yesterday, they found our location. I had to send him to you. I knew you would be at the fair tonight. They are watching. Please, take our son and run. Do not try to find me. Keep them safe. I love you."

Tears poured down David's face as the truth crashed over me. His wife was alive, and this terrified little boy was the son he never knew existed. Leo looked up at him, whispering a single, heartbreaking word: "Daddy?"

Before David could process the shock, the sound of heavy boots crunching on the gravel echoed behind them. He quickly threw the blanket back over Leo and shut the trunk. Turning around, David saw a tall, imposing man in a dark leather jacket scanning the parking lot with a high-powered flashlight. The beam of light cut through the twilight, sweeping across the cars before locking directly onto them. The man lowered the flashlight, a chilling, triumphant smile spreading across his face as he began walking directly toward them. Chloe gripped her father's hand in absolute terror.

"Dad," she whimpered. "That's him. That's the man who was chasing Leo."
