The Miracle on the Gravel Drive

The golden rays of the setting sun cast long, dramatic shadows across the gravel approach of the grand coastal estate. Clara stood trembling, her knuckles white as she gripped her aluminum crutches. At eighteen, her life had been reduced to a quiet, agonizing stillness after a devastating car accident had stolen the sensation in her legs. Her light pink sundress fluttered in the cool evening breeze, a stark contrast to the heavy, oppressive silence that usually surrounded her.

Suddenly, a young man appeared at the edge of the estate. Toby, a twenty-two-year-old with unkempt red hair and worn denim, walked with a purposeful stride. In his hands, he carried a simple metal tub filled with steaming water and crushed medicinal herbs. Without asking for permission, he approached Clara and knelt before her on the sharp gravel.

"I'll help you walk," Toby said softly, his blue eyes filled with an intense, unwavering determination.

Clara whimpered, fear and confusion warring within her. "I can't. The doctors said my nerves are completely dead."

"You can," Toby insisted, gently placing her bare feet into the warm, fragrant water. "Just trust me."

Before she could protest, a loud, commanding voice shattered the quiet evening. Richard, Clara's wealthy fifty-year-old father, rushed down the mansion's steps, his elegant black suit sharp against the sunset. "Hey, stop!" he roared, his face contorted with fury. "Get away from her! Inside, now!"

Toby looked up pleadingly, hands still holding Clara's feet in the water. "Please, just a second."

As Richard reached them, intending to drag Toby away, Clara suddenly gasped. A wave of intense warmth surged through her limbs. Tears of sheer joy spilled over her cheeks as she looked up at her father.

"Dad... I felt that," Clara whispered, her voice trembling.

Richard froze, his anger instantly evaporating into sheer shock. Seizing the moment of silence, Toby reached into his pocket and pulled out a tarnished silver medallion. "My mother said you'd remember this," he said.
