The Boy in the Ring

The golden sunset painted the dusty air of the Blackwood Arena in deep shades of orange and amber. Nineteen-year-old Luke stood frozen in the center of the ring, the heavy, suffocating silence of the crowd pressing down on his shoulders. Just moments before, his boots had slipped on the loose earth, sending him falling hard into the dirt as a massive black shape charged aggressively toward him. Terrified onlookers screamed from the safety of the stands. "Hey!" one cowboy shouted, while another panicked spectator screamed, "Kid, get out of there! No!"

Up in the spectator stands, Walt gripped the cold metal railing so hard his knuckles turned white. His face was twisted in absolute horror as he looked down at the scene unfolding below.

"What is he doing?!"
Walt screamed, his voice carrying over the wind, though his terror seemed mixed with a strange, dark panic.

But Luke did not try to scramble toward the safety fence. Instead, he slowly rose to his knees and then to his feet, his body trembling violently but his eyes locked onto the towering beast. With shaking hands, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a faded red patterned bandana. Tears streamed down his face, cutting clean lines through the thick dust on his cheeks.

"My dad said you'd know this,"
Luke cried out, his voice cracking with raw emotion.
"He said you waited for him."

A woman in the crowd, Karen, covered her mouth and gasped, "Oh God..." as the massive bull dug its hooves into the dirt and charged directly at the defenseless teenager. Luke closed his eyes, holding the red cloth high like a shield.

"Please, don't leave me too,"
he pleaded in a desperate whisper.

Suddenly, the charging beast halted. The bull's dark, surprisingly calm eye blinked just inches from Luke's face. The crowd held its breath as Luke stared up in absolute awe, whispering,

"Ranger?"
The dangerous, untamable bull stood perfectly still, lowering his massive head to gently nudge the red bandana.
