The air in the VIP lounge was thick with the scent of expensive scotch and impending doom. Outside, a midnight thunderstorm raged, mirroring the tempest brewing within. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, distorting the amber glow of the tarmac lights into a watery kaleidoscope. I clutched Barnaby, my daughter Lily’s beloved, tattered teddy bear, its worn fur a familiar comfort against my trembling hands. Across the gleaming Italian walnut table sat Damian Knox, my ex-husband, a titan of industry radiating a predatory wealth that made my skin crawl. His salt-and-pepper hair was slicked back, his charcoal suit impeccable, and his signet ring glinted ominously. He pushed a stack of legal documents towards me, the words “Custody Surrender Agreement” stark and brutal. His lips curled into a cruel smirk as he tapped the signature line with a gold Montblanc pen. “Sign our daughter away, Liam,” he purred, his voice dripping with patronizing mockery. “You’re an unemployed nobody, and my lawyers bought the judge an hour ago.” My breath hitched. Tears welled, blurring his smug face. I couldn’t speak, couldn’t breathe. The sheer injustice of it all threatened to crush me. But as a single tear traced a path down my cheek, my grip tightened on Barnaby. He didn’t know about Barnaby’s secret.
