The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of glittering sequins, black tuxedos, and clinking champagne flutes. It was supposed to be the crowning achievement of our ten-year marriage. Under the heavy crystal chandeliers, Julian held me close as we danced to a slow waltz. His hand on my back felt solid, a reassuring weight that had anchored me through a decade of high-society expectations.

A Sudden Halt

"You are the most beautiful woman in this room, Clara," Julian whispered, his breath warm against my ear. I smiled, leaning my head against his shoulder. But as the orchestra transitioned into a dramatic crescendo, I felt his posture stiffen. His steps became hesitant, his eyes darting toward the grand double doors of the ballroom.

I followed his gaze, and my heart stopped. Standing at the entrance was Victoria, Julian's executive assistant. She wasn't dressed in her usual professional attire. Instead, she wore a stunning emerald green silk gown that clung to her curves. But it wasn't the dress that caught my attention. It was the necklace resting against her collarbone.

"Julian," I whispered, my voice suddenly tight. "Why is she wearing my grandmother's diamond-and-emerald necklace?"

The very heirloom that had supposedly been stolen from our home safe three months ago was sparkling under the ballroom lights, draped around another woman's neck. Julian tried to spin me away, his grip tightening painfully on my hand.

"Clara, don't start," he muttered, his voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "It's just a replica. I had it made for her as a performance bonus. Don't make a scene in front of our investors."

But the lie was too flimsy, and the panic in his eyes was too real. I stopped dancing. Around us, the other couples began to slow down, sensing the sudden tension radiating from the center of the floor. The music faltered and died, leaving only the murmurs of a hundred confused guests.
