The air hung thick and cold, a damp autumn drizzle slicking the cobblestones outside St. Jude’s elite academy. Russet leaves clung to the wet flagstones, mirroring the gloomy clouds above. Amidst the luxury sedans idling in the mist, Hannah Sterling stood frozen, an island of tailored charcoal cashmere against the biting wind. Her porcelain skin was pale, her auburn hair dampened by the mist, and her gloved hands clutched an ivory umbrella as if it were a lifeline. Directly across the wrought-iron gates, huddled on a sodden cardboard sheet, was a figure that made Hannah’s breath hitch – a young girl, no older than fifteen, shivering violently. Her face was gaunt, smudged with soot and rain, her threadbare coat held together by rusty safety pins. Her matted curls clung to her forehead, and her bare ankles, exposed above worn boots, bore a tarnished silver chain.

The girl, Victoria, swayed gently, her breath misting in the frigid air. A haunting, melodic cadence escaped her lips, a wordless hum that seemed to carry the weight of years of hardship. As Hannah watched, paralyzed, Victoria began to sing, her voice a fragile thread in the oppressive silence: "Sleep little star, under winter's deep sky..." Hannah’s own breath hitched, her jaw dropping. Tears welled instantly, blurring her vision as her umbrella slipped from her grasp, splashing into a puddle. The sound seemed to snap Hannah out of her stupor. She dropped to her knees, heedless of the freezing water soaking her expensive coat. Her gloved hands trembled as she reached out, her face contorted with anguish. "Where did you learn that lullaby?!" she choked out, her voice cracking. "That song died fifteen years ago with my stolen daughter!" Victoria flinched back, her eyes wide with a feral panic, teeth clenching as she hunched protectively against the cold iron railings.
