Previously: She thought I was dead. I thought she was gone forever. Our paths crossed on a cold, rainy street, and the truth that shattered my world was revealed.

A Mother's Desperate Plea

Victoria glared through the dripping strands of her matted hair, her chin quivering from the cold and a fierce, defensive pride. She clutched her thin lapels tighter against her hollow chest, her street-hardened defiance a thin shield against the overwhelming emotions flooding the scene. "Back off, rich lady!" she spat, her voice raw and rough. "The old man who raised me sang it before he starved in the alley!" Hannah swallowed hard, a suffocating lump forming in her throat. The agonizing realization dawned in her eyes, the truth too terrible to bear. She saw not just a street child, but a ghost of the daughter she had lost, the daughter she believed was dead.

As Hannah lunged forward, her hands outstretched in a desperate plea, Victoria thrust her arms out in a violent shove, a desperate attempt to push her away. But Hannah was faster, her gloved hand catching Victoria’s swinging wrist with a sharp, wet slap. The sudden recoil, the jarring impact, caused Victoria’s frayed trouser leg to ride upward, exposing her bare, frostbitten ankle. It was then that Hannah saw it clearly – the tarnished, intricately engraved antique silver chain encircling Victoria’s slender limb. "He didn't raise you, he kidnapped you!" Hannah cried, her voice trembling, breathless. "Look at your ankle!" Victoria’s eyes widened in paralyzed shock, her pupils dilating as she stared down at her exposed foot. The tough street armor she had worn for so long began to disintegrate, her chin quivering violently as hot tears spilled down her soot-streaked cheeks. Faint childhood memories, buried deep beneath years of hardship, began to surface.
