Richard answered the call, putting it on speakerphone. The voice of his investigator, David, filled the tense room. "Richard, I just ran the background check you requested on Eleanor’s notary. The man who supposedly witnessed that agreement is her brother, who lost his license two years ago for fraud."

Eleanor’s smirk froze. Her face drained of all color as David continued. "Not only that, Richard. I found the original video files from your late wife’s old laptop. Eleanor didn't meet you by chance. She was your late wife's former nurse, and she deliberately targeted you after reading your wife's private journals."

Richard felt a chill run down his spine. But the biggest revelation was yet to come. "And there's one more thing," David said. "Your late wife left a digital safety deposit box. The password was Lily's birthday. Inside is a video diary detailing how she suspected Eleanor was trying to manipulate her medication, and a legally binding custody clause that automatically revokes any future stepmother's rights in the event of abuse."

Eleanor stumbled backward, her back hitting the cold marble wall. The carefully constructed trap she had built had completely collapsed. The law, backed by the voice of the woman she had tried to replace, had finally caught up to her.

Within minutes, the police arrived. Guided by the undeniable video evidence of child abuse and the proof of document fraud, they escorted a handcuffed Eleanor out of the estate. She screamed and cursed, but Richard didn't even look at her.

Instead, he knelt back down to Lily, gently wiping the remaining tears from her face. "It's over, Lily. She's gone, and she's never coming back."

Lily hugged him tightly, the heavy burden finally lifted from her young shoulders. Richard realized that while he couldn't bring his late wife back, her love had reached across time to protect their daughter one last time.
