The rain fell in merciless sheets, drumming a chaotic rhythm against the glass sliding doors of the county hospital. Inside, the sterile, blue-tinted fluorescent lights hummed, casting a cold glow over the quiet reception area. Leo burst through the doors, his breath coming in ragged gasps. At seventy-two, his body was frail, but the sheer terror of losing his grandson gave him unnatural strength. Clutched tightly against his chest was six-year-old Michael, wrapped in a soaked woolen blanket, his skin pale and his breathing dangerously shallow.

"Please, somebody help him!" Leo cried out, his voice cracking with desperation. He approached the high reception desk, his worn, dark green jacket dripping water onto the polished floor.

The receptionist looked up, her expression hardening as she took in Leo’s disheveled appearance. "Sir, you need to fill out admission forms and provide insurance information first," she said flatly.

"I don't have insurance, and I have no money!" Leo screamed, tears mixing with the rainwater on his weathered face. "He’s burning up! He can't breathe!"

Before she could answer, a heavy hand clamped onto Leo's shoulder. Officer Marcus, the on-duty security detail, stepped forward. His police uniform was crisp, his badge catching the cold light. "Sir, you can't cause a scene here. You need to step back," Marcus ordered, his voice firm but laced with a hint of pity.

"No! Please!" Leo sobbed, pulling Michael closer.

From inside the blanket, the boy whimpered, his voice barely a whisper.

"No treatment, Grandpa... don't leave me."

Marcus pulled Leo back, but as he did, the blanket slipped, revealing Michael’s face. Marcus froze. His eyes widened in absolute shock, his grip on Leo’s arm turning to paper. He stared at the child's face, his breath catching in his throat.

"Michael... my son,"

Marcus whispered, his voice trembling with a sudden, overwhelming grief.
