Previously: When Leo rushed to his father's sudden wake, his sister Maria blocked him from opening the casket, claiming a contagious disease. But a muffled sound from inside revealed a terrifying, dark truth.

The Cracks in the Lie

Leo stared at his sister, his tear-filled eyes narrowing as her words registered. The explanation felt cold, clinical, and entirely wrong. Their father, Arthur, had been in perfect health just three days ago when they last spoke on the phone. How could a sudden, highly contagious disease take him so quickly without any warning, and why was Maria hosting a wake in the family living room instead of a hospital or a secure facility?

“A contagious disease?”
Leo repeated, his voice dropping to a suspicious whisper.
“Maria, that makes no sense. Why didn't you call me when he was admitted? Why is there no medical staff here?”

Maria’s face hardened, her grip on his arm tightening. “There wasn't time, Leo. It was fast, and the doctors said we had to contain it. Please, just let him rest in peace. We need to let the transport team take him to the crematorium.”

Just as Maria stepped between Leo and the cherrywood box, a faint, rhythmic vibration shuddered through the wood. It was subtle, but to Leo, who was leaning against the side, it felt like a heartbeat. Then came a muffled, scraping sound from deep within the casket. It sounded like fingernails clawing against fabric.

Leo froze. He looked down at the casket, then up at Maria, whose face had gone completely bloodless.

“Did you hear that?”
Leo whispered, his heart hammering against his ribs.

“It's just... gases escaping the body. It's natural, Leo. We have to leave the room right now!”
Maria panicked, grabbing his hand and trying to pull him toward the hallway.

But Leo's instincts flared. The desperation in Maria's eyes wasn't grief—it was terror. Disregarding her warnings, Leo shoved his sister aside. He threw his weight against the heavy lid and grabbed the brass latches, shocked to find they were locked tight with a heavy padlock from the outside. Realizing something was horribly wrong, he grabbed a heavy iron fire poker from the hearth and shoved it into the latch mechanism, leveraging his entire weight to pop the lock open.
