With a loud, metallic screech, the padlock snapped. Leo threw the heavy cherrywood lid open, bracing himself for the worst. But what he saw made his breath catch in his throat. His father, Arthur, was lying inside, very much alive. His hands were bound with zip ties, and a thick layer of duct tape covered his mouth. Arthur's eyes, wide with absolute terror and relief, locked onto his son.

“Dad!”

Leo gasped, immediately reaching in to tear the tape from his father’s mouth and slicing the zip ties with his pocketknife.

Arthur coughed violently, drawing in deep gulps of air.

“Leo... thank God,”

he gasped, his voice raspy and weak.

“She did this. Maria and her husband. They drugged me.”

Leo had secretly shared his location with a detective friend before arriving, suspicious of Maria's sudden, vague texts about their father's passing. The officers quickly subdued Maria, placing her in handcuffs as she screamed in denial.
