A Shocking Interruption

The scent of fresh white hydrangeas filled the grand wedding chapel, illuminated by the soft, diffused afternoon light. Mark stood at the altar, looking down at his beautiful bride, Sarah. He wore a sleek, modern tuxedo, and everything about the day seemed absolutely flawless. It was the culmination of years of planning and the merger of two prominent families. But just as the priest began the holy vows, the heavy oak doors at the back of the chapel creaked open.

A young, blonde girl named Lily, no older than eight, stepped into the aisle. She wore a simple, oversized grey knitted sweater over a small skirt, her face smudged with tears. In her trembling hands, she clutched a torn photograph. The congregation gasped, a wave of whispers rippling through the pews. Sarah froze, her eyes widening in confusion, while Mark felt a strange, cold dread settle deep in his chest.

Lily walked slowly toward the altar, her shoulders shaking with heavy, silent sobs. When she reached the steps, she looked up at Mark. Her voice was small but echoed clearly through the silent chapel.

"I don't want money, please. I just want my mom not to go to heaven."

Mark’s heart shattered. Ignoring the gasps of his mother in the front row, he knelt down on the cold marble steps to meet the little girl's eyes. He spoke softly, trying to calm his racing mind.

"Who are you, sweetie? Who sent you here?"

Lily wiped a tear from her cheek, her voice trembling. "Nobody. I came because she's dying."

A cold sweat broke out on Mark's neck. "What is your mother's name?"

"Johanda," Lily whispered. "She kept your picture."

The name hit Mark like a physical blow. Johanda was his college sweetheart, the woman who had mysteriously vanished from his life eight years ago. He looked down at the torn photo in Lily's hand—it was a picture of him. Without a word to his shocked bride or his furious mother, Mark stood up and ran from the chapel. He drove frantically to the city hospital, bursting into a sterile white room where Johanda lay, pale and weak. He rushed to her side, crying, "I'm here, I'm here. Why didn't you tell me?"

Johanda looked at him with fading eyes and whispered, "Because... she's not the only one."
