Mark stared at Johanda, his mind spinning in a vortex of confusion and grief. "What do you mean she's not the only one?" he asked, his voice trembling. Johanda weakly pointed her frail hand toward a medical curtain drawn across the other side of the room. Mark slowly stood up, his heart hammering against his ribs, and pulled back the curtain.

Sitting on the adjacent hospital bed was a little boy. He was bald from chemotherapy, his eyes hollow but bright, holding a small plastic dinosaur. The boy looked identical to the childhood photographs Mark’s mother kept on her mantelpiece. This was Leo, Lily’s twin brother, who was fighting a desperate battle against aggressive leukemia.

Johanda began to weep, the sound ragged and painful. She explained that eight years ago, when she discovered she was pregnant with twins, Mark’s mother, Helen, had intervened. Helen had threatened to destroy Johanda’s family business and legally take the children away using her immense wealth and influence, unless Johanda took a payout and disappeared forever. Desperate to protect her unborn babies and her family, Johanda had fled.

Before Mark could process the sheer cruelty of his mother's actions, the door to the hospital room swung open. Helen walked in, her face a mask of cold authority, flanked by the family's corporate lawyers. She didn't look at the dying woman or the sick child; her eyes were locked entirely on her son.

"This is enough, Mark," Helen said coldly. "You have a wedding to finish. These people are nothing to you. If you do not walk out of this room right now, I will personally ensure the trust fund funding this hospital's experimental leukemia program is completely withdrawn."

Mark stood shocked, caught between the mother who had manipulated his entire life and the secret family he had just discovered, while Sarah, his abandoned bride, suddenly appeared in the doorway, having followed him from the chapel.
