A Touch of Golden Light

For five long years, Clara had been confined to her wheelchair, watching the world pass by from the cobblestone driveway of her family’s grand estate. The sunlit afternoons were her only solace, spent beside her loyal Setter, who never left her side. Her life was a quiet, gilded cage, managed by her overprotective uncle Julian and her faithful servant, Amelia. But on this particular afternoon, the heavy silence of the estate was shattered by an unexpected intruder.

A young man, disheveled and covered in soot, stumbled onto the driveway. His clothes were tattered flannel, and his eyes carried a heavy, desperate intensity. Before Amelia could intervene, the stranger threw himself onto the cobblestones, reaching directly for Clara’s lifeless feet.

"Don't touch me!" Clara gasped, pulling back in instinctual fear.

Amelia rushed forward, her face pale with alarm. "Get away from her! Guards!" she cried, grabbing the young man's shoulder to pull him back. But as Clara looked into the stranger's eyes, she saw no malice—only a profound, aching sorrow. Something deep within her stirred, a faint whisper of a memory she couldn't quite grasp.

"Leave him alone," Clara commanded, raising her hand to stop Amelia. "Let's see what he wants."

The young man did not speak. Instead, he knelt quietly, placing his rough, calloused hands gently onto the wheelchair's footrest. Suddenly, a warm, golden light began to glow intensely from his palms. Amelia watched in stunned, breathless disbelief as the light enveloped Clara's legs. Clara gasped as a wave of intense, tingling warmth surged through her limbs, a sensation she hadn't felt since the tragic carriage accident that had paralyzed her.

Tears welled in Clara’s eyes as she looked down at her moving toes. She looked up at the mysterious young man, her voice trembling. "How?" she whispered.

The stranger offered a bittersweet smile, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

"Soon you will remember me," he said softly.
